CARIBOU formerly MANITOBA play their first London show for over a year as a headline double bill with BOOM BIP and full band on here at The Scala on the 19th April.
Having been sued for trademark infringement having been sued by one of the original ageing punks (Handsome ‘Dick’ Manitoba, of The Dictators), Manitoba opted not to fill the retirement coffers of several high priced US lawyers. He just changed his artist name to CARIBOU.
Tonight CARIBOU promote their new album The Milk of Human Kindness released on Leaf on April 18th 2005 with a live set that sees them deliver carnival-esque whirl of ridiculous melodies, effusive noise, stampeding beats alongside furiously harmonised vocals. Two drummers, visuals and whirling guitars and keyboards create a claustrophobic, mesmeric soundscape akin to My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3’s early work.
“A sprawling, bucolic tour de force, like early Mercury Rev on magic mushrooms” Arena
“A spiky sunburst of experimental rock, a multifarious mixture of the Byrds, Spiritualized, Faust and, well, Manitoba. Sprawling cyber-delic sweetness” i-D
“Thickly layered textures that build up into a dense, psychedelic miasma akin to My Bloody Valentine, The Flaming Lips and The Avalanches... Recommended” The Independent
Having set the foundations with the excellent debut Seed To Sun, been remixed by the likes of Boards of Canada, Mogwai and Four Tet, supported the Super Furry Animals on their US tour BOOM BIP release new album Blue Eyed In The Red Room on Lex Records on 21st February 2005.
Tonight BOOM BIP and full band play a set of new material alongside familiar tracks from Seed To Sun as they mix soaring strings, plucked guitars and digital rhythms with ghost voices, electro hymns and crushed and rebuilt hip-hop drums. Using a wide range of emotional effects, Boom Bip creates a soundtrack that has as much to do with the dream sequences of Boards Of Canada as with the down-to-earth darkness of Mogwai.
"The focused intensity of techno nut Bogdan Raczynski and the ethereal weightlessness of Richard D James´ early ambient works, Boom Bip fluctuates between weird, the clever and the downright beautiful" NME
Super Furry Animals´ main man GRUFF RHYS makes a special live guest appearance to sing the excellent track Do´s and Don´ts featured on BOOM BIP´s Blue Eyed In The Red Room. His "slouch-mouthed mumblings is truly special, growing from a Brian Eno-joins-The Beach Boys wash of voices and bass pulses, through a verse that is grumpy and disengaged enough to have come from Pink Floyd´s mordant masterpiece ´The Wall´, to a chorus that stands on its head whistling circus tunes..." NME
GRUFF RHYS joins KIERAN HEBDEN AKA FOUR TET at the decks to dig out a crate of psychedelic pop, 50´s jazz, raw hip hop and early folk music - you may even hear the mournful cry of a curlew...!
SHIT AND SHINE unleash an all-over-the-map genre-smash of avant-grind, post-core-pre-punk, Euro-pop action. Strange, fucked up, and nerve-bakingly lovely... Somewhere between early Butthole Surfers, PIL, Napalm Death, Merzbow, early Melvins, Mainliner, Serge Gainsbourg and Beach Boys...
